2002 Aerio sedan

Couple of questions. My car only gets about 23 MPG and I am not sure why. On the freeway going about 75-80 its at 3200 RPM's is that normal? Also when I put it in reverse it makes a loud screeching noise. I am not sure whats wrong with everything. I just had my transmission fluid changed and that didn't fix anything. It has about 94k miles on it and I don't think the plugs or a tune up has ever been done on it. Any help would be nice. Thank you.

I assume you changed the transmission filter also when changed the fluid. It sounds to me like a bad tranny. It is not normal for the car to reach 3200 rpm when driving at 75-80 mph. This must be caused by clutch slippering inside the tranny. The loud screeching noise in reverse is very compatible with worned clutches. Also the low gas efficiency is also compatible with clutch slippering. All arrows point to a bad tranny. Good luck!!

I took it in to have them look at the transmisson and they said it was ok, Thanks for the help guess its just a POS.

I replaced my sparkplugs and I still am getting crap for gas milage. Anyone know of anything else I can do to make this POS get back to the normal MPG. I have a K&n air filter. The car still making weird noises in reverse.

Hmmm... I am not an auto mechanic, but the fact that it makes a screeching noise in reverse is not good. How about a second opinion on the tranny ? As far as MPG goes, I have a '04 Aerio and I am averaging in the high 20's. I usually hit about 2000 RPMs going 60MPH.

I also have 97000+ miles on mine. Runs great, I would be happier if I got higher MPG.

I agree about the second opinion on the tranny. That screeching noise in reverse is definitively not normal. Also tranny slippery at high revolutions can cause high rpm's at lower speeds. About the MPG you are no so far from the reality, remember also that driving manners has to do a lot with this as well as the use of A/C. Good luck!!
