Joel,

Before you punt, check if the battery is good. Put a volt meter on it. Probably is one of those 3 VDC thin, watch type batteries. Once you know that the battery is good, try the procedure again (at least tiwce). When I did it, it seemed to require more than 1 attempt to achieve success. Good luck...

I ended up taking it back to the dealer and that's what they did. Found the battery to be 1. upside down 2.dead (even though it was brand new)...
Put in a new battery(correct side up) and it worked straight out. No programming needed.
