Aerio SX Gear Shifter

How do you replace a 2005 Suzuki Aerio SX gear shifter? I have tried unscrewing the bottom and then the top and got nothing. I can't seem to remove the shift bag without ripping it. Anyone have any ideas for me. Thanks.

The knob screws on, but it is very tight. You might have to use channel locks and a rag to get it loose. The knob may get damaged, so you might have to have a replacement on hand..

I tried to use a pair of channel locks and it is just turning the rubber on the shift knob itself. The knob will not come off.

Any other ideas?
