I am a electrical generator mechanic, and i look at it this way. I'm kinda skeptical to the grounding to get more horsepower, but it does make sense. when you have more than one thing going in your car like stereo or heater or fan you get a bigger load obviously. This means that more of a load will be placed on the alternator and more of a load on ground or common. So, you could get a higher amperage alternator and/or get a higher amperage ground. What I mean when saying a higher amperage ground is dividing it up so everything isn't running through one wire and getting a bigger ground wire that can dissipate more heat. Now, I haven't researched it and don't have any numbers for ya, but I seriously doubt it'll do enough to even worry about... but I am pretty sure that it would give you maybe like 1mpg diff. (if that)... the whole amperage thing and the bigger alternator is because when you place more of a load on an alternator or generator it becomes harder to turn the rotor. what turns the rotor? the engine... thus, the engine having to work harder... with the amperage and ground wire thing... picture it like this... you're trying to move water (current) through a single hose then you try to move MORE water through that hose... would the water flow easier if you added more hoses off of the one hose (i dont mean connecting them together like you go garden hoses) YES....
