I'm a computer tech by trade (which means I have basic skills with tools and troubleshooting), and have replaced spark plugs/wires, but that's as far as I've gotten in self maintenance. I'd like to save the labor and install new front rotors myself (and maybe pads) but I'm hesitant since It's pretty serious/costly if I screw up.

I may be missing a few things. Hopefully some of my mechanic friends will have some jack stands. They may even offer to help .
I didn't see a lot of good, solid advice on rotor selection. I'm on a budget so I'm not likely looking at performance parts, but if there's something better than OEM available for a little more I'd like to go with that. Suggestions for parts suppliers is also welcome. Ebay can be a very scary place if you don't know where to step. lol

Jack stands are not that expensive - try Walmart - and if you're doing your own maintenance, you'll need them sooner or later.
That's very true. Every penny matters at the moment though (been out of work since December ).
I checked for the brembo rotors (I've done a lot of searching since I last posted) and the amazon reseller was out of stock. I think they may be a little out of my price range anyway. It looks like they usually go for $80 each and I can get (2) premium decent rotors for $80 shipped right now on amazon.
I also found a canadian seller on Ebay and have a best offer to them. They have excellent feedback.

Yup - I can understand the being out of work thing - are the rotors that bad?
I guess it's a different rotor but I paid around $35 a piece of the front rotors for a Swift GTi and I had been driving the car going on two years with warped rotors - I did look at eBay, but, even though I have been an eBayer for close to a decade, I'm always wary of what they sell.

Mine are warped and I've had a few people confirm it. I've also had to replace warped rotors once before on a company car and it's having the exact same symptoms, except much less severe. I don't want it to get too bad, I can imagine the calipers take a beating if the rotors get too out of whack.

try napa for rotors, ive been using napa ultra premium rotors and ceramic pads for about 5 months now and couldnt be happier. i think rotors and pads all around cost me like 250 or so. so ide bet the whole deal would cost about 145 for front. rotors and pads that is.

Thanks, I have several Napa in the area. Good experience with them. Autozone was overpriced for just the OEM parts.
I'm waiting to hear back from the Ebay seller on my best offer. If that doesn't work I continue my search. I figure I have a month or two before I really need to have them replaced.
