The Fit is a great car for what it is. In fact, it's awesome. It's a gas-sipping, big-cargo hauling small car.
What it is not, is what every Honda Jockey thinks all Hondas are -- little rocket ships. It looks like it could be fast, but think of it like a miniature Honda Odessy minivan. It even looks like one. It's a great car for what it is, and I'm sure the Honda crowd will have it built to the hilt eventually, but it's starting from pretty humble beginnings.
It has about the same cargo capacity as my Forenza wagon. What it doesn't have is the following as standard -- they cost extra:
- a console armrest
- a rollback privacy cover for the cargo area ($165!!)
- carpet floor mats
- steering wheel audio controls -- not available
All of which came standard on my wagon.
and -- it costs a whole lot more. Resale will be better, so you recoup some of that.
But - it's not a race car. Fact is, neither is our car. They just aren't. They can be zippy and fun to drive, and they box above their weight class, but they is what they is. Some guys are pushing the boundaries, and getting more out of them, but both guys that have pushed them to the edge are currently sidelined with transmission problems. If you're comfortable with pushing that edge, go for it - you can get decent results. But unless you're BMS, have experience tuning, or have another car to drive, you might reconsider this car as the base for your dreams of speed.
Off-topic, but my two bits... I'm sure I'll hear about it from the guys who have built. And in my defence, I do have a short shifter and will be doing a pulley... there is room for improvement, but I'm being realistic.
