motor shuts down

I have a 91 samarai 2 wheel drive. My son was driving it the other day and it shut off on him three different time. He explained it like someone shut off the motor. He said the lights stayed on. I have it in the garage and I went and started it, it ran less than a minute and the car shut off but dash lights stayed on. What kind of an electrical problem am I looking at? It starts fine, but shuts off like you turned the key off.
