Unhappy Gear Shifter I NEED HELP BADDD..

Hey all, I am a newbie to the whole forum thing, and I have a doozie! My son was driving down the road and his shifter came right out into his hand, he stuck it back in there and managed to get it home although it would not go into 1st, 3rd or 5th gear. Thankgod he was near home and not on the highway. This is a 98 Chevy Tracker. If anyone can tell me what might have happened and what i need to do to fix it I will appreciate it greatly. If there is anyone with a diagram of this thing it would be awesome if i could get it. It's just him and I that will be trying to fix it,he's a pretty smart kid at 17 yrs.
Thanks so much for any help!

By the way my name is Samantha, and it's very nice to meet everyone!

had the exact same problem like 10 years ago when i 1st got my 92 tracker
at the very bottom of shifter theres a bit of a knob that fits right into the bushing.
inside the tranny the bushing sets right into a housing. the bushing is off the shifter & outside the housing, its in the way of gears 1,3,&5. i had to reach in there with my pinky (chubby fingers) & fish it out, its under the oil in there.

Default Shifter bushing fun

I just had the same problem when I removed the shifter in my Tracker. It fell behind the rods just like described.

After about an hour and a half, and a bunch of bent pieces of safety wire I finally got it out and back in the correct position. Oh yea, there was some swearing going on, but I was alone in the garage so no one got offended!

Too much fun this little car is!
