i have another few questions for mr internet search guru (finchevy)

there's some silver trim on the steering wheel that i want to paint. i want to know if i can just pop them off or if i'd have to remove the steering wheel to get at screws.

also, how do you remove the side moulding without hitting a mailbox and breaking it off? i know i could take the door panels off and remove them that way, but i think you can slide them front/back to get them off the clips...

any info you can find would be helpful. i'd do a search, but you seem to know where to look. instead of wasting my time, i'm asking a pro

a few of us on here have the isotta knob. it comes with the safety lift...it was a pain and a few swear words to get the stock knob off. i ended up getting the short lever anyways.i'd suggest you get a short shifter from danny and save yourself some inhalation of melting plastic.

mine didn't want to come off via boiling water, so i took my heat gun to it until it decided to practically fall off. needless to say, it didn't smell good.

where exactly did you find your shift knob. I did a google search and can up with a bunch of bogus sites with isotta knobs but not the one in the picture or one with the safety mechanism.

Found something.. Again from Ukrainian site.

No need to take steering wheel off, just it´s cover.

Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. ( So airbag won´t blow up)
2. Rotate the steering wheel to allow access to the steering wheel horn cap screw. Remove the horn cap screw.
3. Rotate the steering wheel to allow access to the other steering wheel horn cap screw. Remove the horn cap screw.

Looks like then trim is easy to remove..
Or the hard way:
Trim has L-shape on longer side, so i would try to push it in and gently pull it up. Without taking cover plate off...

pic is sketchy..

Thank to Service manual

the tabs in the steering wheel are easy to take off without taking apart the wheel. just use a flathead and pry on the bottom side of the silver pieces. they take a little effort, but they come out pretty easily. i did mine and they look awesome after they are painted to match the rest of the trim. i still cant get that center panel around my radio out though... its a serious PITA

The battery might be for the backup power for the steering wheel control memory.
