Yep, like 99% of the cars (not SUVs or wnnabe like SUVs) on the road... sounds like a lawyer's CYA thing to me. Ever wondered why its OK in Australia, but not here? USA had too many hungry lawyers to keep busy :-)
If made correctly, I wouldn't be scared using a trailer up to 800-900Lbs like Kinky said. as long as it's driven correctly. If they ever ask me why the hitch is there, they'll hear that I had no other safe choice for a bike rack!
My main concern is the trans. - I know the Lacetti/Holden gets a smaller engine; does anyone know if the transmission is the same? If so, we should have zero problems.

Depends which engine.. I think the 1.6l lacettis is the same engine/tran as the daewoo lanos which is a bit weaker actually. Not sure on the 1.4l though... might be the same tranny as the 1.6l
I just got my trailer hitch installed yesterday for my 2005 Forenza EX wagon by the dealership, even though I thought it would be a Suzuki brand hitch it wasn't ( it was from Uhaul). It works awesome I can tow my jetski and not have any worries. The car itself is slow but towing doesn't really effect it too much. My jetski doesn't bounce around and neither does the car (my Volvo use to move a lot compared to this car). The owners manual states not to tow with this vehicle but I see no reason why it should not be able to. Good luck to anyone who wants to tow with their car.

I agree, Dog - this isn't a car for heavy loads at all. Stopping is the problem, you are right. It's just like people who come drive in the snow, and think - "hey, I've got 4wd. I can GO!" and they gun it... not thinking that they can't stop in those conditions. I've pulled a few guys outta the snowbank for just that reason.
I think those of us who are interested in towing are talking superlight toys - A jetski, a small motorcycle. My bike is ~400 lbs; a small single-rail bike trailer is maybe 250.
As long as you are smart about the task, you should be fine. It's the same effect as people who are aware that their 4wd isn't going to help braking in slick conditions-- they slow down, give themselves extra time for braking, etc.
It's the essential cognitive process of having a damn clue about what you are doing. Unfortunately, it is missing in a large percentage of humanity; but some of us don't run off the road in the snow. We play it smart. I think we could handle braking while towing, too...
By the way, Uhaul is manufacturing a towbar for us.
