hello guys, hope if anyone can help....i am wondering regarding the fuel warning light .
im try to see what mileage per gallon this car does and wanted to refuel soon the fuel light would come on,but been driving for a wile and the fuel indicator as been to the red zone for at list 20miles without the warning light coming on,so is there a way to test if the light is working ??should it take longer to show, just don't want risk to run out of fuel on the middle of the road.
on my hold ford focus there was a method to light all the warning light to see if they were working, was a combination of the ing key and the button that reset the miles on the odo.
i was hopping that the lacetti/reno had something similar.
thank you

well the only way i know would be to let it run out...if i wanted to find out i would get a gallon of gas and put in your trunk and if you run out of gas in the middle of know where you can use that gas in your trunk to get you to the nearest gas station..
Welcome Guinness -- Although my wagon (estate) has the 2.0 and I expect you have the 1.6 or 1.8, I imagine the fuel tank is the same. I've seen the same thing with the fuel warning light, and it will actually fade in and out when the fuel is at the margins of triggering it. If I run the fuel down that far, I too hit the red before the light comes on. If it has come on at all, I wouldn't be concerned about its failure.
Two thoughts:
- With the fuel pumps now located in the tank, it's a bad idea to run the tank below 1/4 remaining. The fuel in the tank acts to cool the fuel pump, and running empty leads to premature pump failure.
- The most accurate way to calculate fuel is to top off at each fill, and actually calculate miles divided by gallons (or whatever correlating measures you use). Doesn't matter how far down you run the tank.
Top off your tank, note your mileage or set trip meter, drive till you need to refuel then divide your mileage by the gallons you refueled with, that will give you your MPG'S.
If you are trying to find out how many gallons are left when the fuel warning light comes on then do the same thing; top off your tank, then when you refuel deduct the gallons used from 14.5.
The fuel warning light is very inaccurate, I've refueled with anywhere from 12 to 13.5 gallons after it came on.
THE problem is not calculating what is the mile for gallon ,the problem is knowing if the warning light will come on at all.
in UK with 17 litre of fuel (£20.00 pounds) i get 140 city miles.
my friend just got the chevy tacuma mpv, and is having the same problem, the indicator is on the red area but the warning light still dont come on. so i am wondering if there is a warning light in the first place.
the manual suggest yes,and says that when it comes on there will be about 7 litre left.
today tried again, been in the red area for about 20 miles then i decide to refill because i did not want get stuck in the middle of the road if suddently i run out of fuel.
can anyone post a pic of the lacetti/reno fuel warning light when is on,so i can see where the needle is about in the red area.

sorry but it does not make sense to me.
to calculate the miles per gallon i usually wait till the warning light comes on,then i fill the tank (for example £20 pounds, that gives me 16.96litre ),then drive until the warning light comes on again,i take note of how many miles i done from the refill to the moment that the light comes on and then i do the calculation.
that what i been doing with my previous cars.
but with this car i still cant get the warning light to come on

is this what your looking for..... this link has a pic of the light on found it last night.

If the light was consistent, that would work. Very few cars are consistent enough to be accurate this way. Our car is nowhere close enough -- it fades in and out rather than clicking on.
Just use the trip meter - reset it when you fill, and divide that number by how much you put in.
Maybe fill a small gas can and take it with you -- drive around an area where you can get to a station quickly, and drive until the light comes on.
sorted, the warning light is working,it took quite a wile to come on but is working.
it is not steady ,it comes and goes, but i did not run out of fuel.
i will try to get it further to see how many miles i can do with the warning light solid on.
thank you for the input.
btw without starting a new thread i would like to know were the fuel filter is on the 1.6 engine.
thanx
