Can't tell if I need oil. Help!

Every time I check the oil the dipstick never correctly gauges how much i have. Sometimes, it gives me a semi accurate level that I can see but when i do i t a minute later to double check the oil is the whole way up one side of it or in spots. Is there any other way to see if I need to add oil? I guess getting a better dipstick could work b/c the factory one on this 2004 Forenza is terrible. First car ive ever owned that you couldn't accurately tell if you need to add oil or not. Pretty frustrating. Any suggestions why or what to do? Thanks.

Is the car on a level surface and cooled off when you check it? Also do you wipe off the oil on the dip stick before you check it?
