I did the mod a while back when this forum was posted and it works. I have learned though, before i got my O2 censor replaced, if i used AC it would kill all my gas. If you really wanna save gas, keep windows up and no AC and just use the outside air, turn it on but turn AC off...lol. Yeah, its hot, but aleast you have some kinda of air without the drag or power eating up gas...
i always have my windows down. i usually don't go much faster than 60. the drag created by having the windows down isn't really enough to decrease your gas mileage by THAT much unless you're going 60+
i used to watch mythbusters religiously, but then i got a girlfriend and i'm usually out and about when it's on. i saw the episode where they tested this, though. they also tested the tailgate myth on 2 different episodes(one was a revisit).
if leaving my windows up going about 45mph on average every day saves me gas mileage, then i'd be getting about 35 mpg or more. those are some really nice numbers. if i had an AFC, it'd probably be 40 since our stock afr is 8:1(correct me if i'm wrong).
i think that the 06 models have been fixed of this problem. i don't really run my A/C, but it seems fine even for a short drive. if i had it on for a longer time, id probably turn it off because it'd get chilly. granted i'm not in 100+ degree heat daily like some of you.
here's another idea to save on gas mileage and keep cool. run the A/C when you're already at speed(cruise if you have it) and at stops. turn it off when you go to accelerate, but leave the fan and recirculate on. they say that you lose about 10% of your horsepower when your A/C is on, which means it takes more effort out of your engine to get to speed.

hey, i got a 2006 optra5.. i think the tubing is exactly like the reno... my question is, how long is that AC hose ?... ( im sorry if its written here and i didnt see it... ) thank you !!

i feel a bigger engine hit when i have a/c on... on the onramps i have to chug it to get to freeway speed ;_;

i got a question !! ... today i opened the hood to inspect things on how im gonna do the mod... i found that the steel hose coming out of the compressor is insulated on certain parts.. like the 1st 1 foot of it is wrapped in black rubber, and the part that is close to the engine, really close to its exit of the compressor is wrapped with an aluminum like thing... but other than that its not insulated... oh and my ac isnt cold enough... so doing this mod will def. help ?... should i put the insulation over these "stock" insulated places ?... and is the cold ac pipe the one that is thicker than the one near it ?... and is it the pipe that enters the firewall on the passenger size ?... thank you helpers !!

Also there is a little trick that alot of people who run muscle cars like to use. Run your heater during a run it helps keep engine cooler, not sure how well this works for our cars but I know that it can be the difference between finishing a drag and having your engine over heat an eighth of a mile in.

We have newer cars though...they should not over heat.
When I had my factory cooling system I was doing laps on the track for up to 30mins non stop at a time in up to 116* F weather. Never had any problems with the car overheating.
