Wrapping both would help, but for different reason. Ones keeping the heat out, the others keeping the heat in. Wrapping the header will help keep over all temps down

A quick way to make your AC feel colder is to hit the "recirculate" button on the dash next to the AC button.

This isn't really written about anywhere but everyone I know seems to know it so pardon me for mentioning it.

I posted upstream that I might try this on my Elantra, and now that we're into the hot summer months, this is a good time. I'm looking at the AC and I see there are two lines running from the condensor to the firewall. I take it that only one of these is cold when the engine is running, and the other one will be warm? So I only have to wrap the cold one? One is has a nipple with an H on the cover and the other one has an L. Is the H the one to wrap? Reading masterbiscuit's post, it looks like I should be doing the low pressure cold pipe which is probably the one with L on the cap.

Also, I see that my tubing has several rubber hose sections. Do those get wrapped the same way? (Do Renos have rubber hose sections also?)

If this works, there will be several people doing it over on ElantraClub.com!

I'd be interesting in seeing what the difference is; on the Elantra there is less of a tubing run near the exhaust manifold; maybe this mod will not reap the same dividends on an Elantra as it does on the Reno.

If you can tell the difference between what you have now and when you insulate behind the engine, I may try it.

What I have learned is that yes, the design stinks. Who would route the very beginning of the low pressure (cold) pipe RIGHT BETWEEN the exhaust and the radiator?! Would have been so much better to send that pipe down and under instead of up and between.

Also, I don't think we need to be insulating the high pressure (warm) return pipe. The only place I would recommend is right by the firewall, to separate warm from cold cause they're almost touching there. Everywhere else, the high and low are separated nicely.

Looks ugly as sin, but I don't mind if it gets me cold cold cold air...heh. I was seriously considering emptying the system and replacing the coolant with that Arctic Freeze stuff. But I'm not sure about laws and safety and such releasing 134-A into the air....

hey do u have pics of what ur insulation looks like

I can get some easy, no prob. I originally insulated both lines, thinking that I'd be keeping the heat from the high line out of the engine bay. And while this is true, it's not as good for the AC. Remember, that keeps the hot side even hotter and sends that right back into circulation.

Kinda defeats the purpose of getting it COLDer...lol

So I took the insul off the high side and let it radiate into the engine bay. It's minimal anyways as it runs right past the well vent. My AC is a LOT colder.

I've never got it under 40 though. Before the insul I was getting around 52-54 degrees on max. After the insul and a r-134a charge I can get it as low as 43 degrees. This is on fan 2 with the recirculation button pressed.

Keep in mind, I have the UD pulley, so that's limiting my cooling potential. But I'll be honest, at 43 degrees, I'm very very chilly....heh. On the trip home from NY yesterday (525 miles) I had to leave it on fan 1 with the thermostat towards the middle, or else we were cold.

That's plenty for me

I'll get pictures in a little bit.
