Ok first I know this is a pretty far fetched item right now for most people... But It's something I am looking at for the future... How much and how difficult would it be to put a sequential into say a reno or a forenza...
I eventually want to do something similar to a rally car's sequential where the clutch is electronically controlled while shifting and all you have to do is shift up without leaving the gas pedal... Again I know this would probably cost upwards of $12-15,000, but I am just throwing something out there to get your guys opinion...
It would be original for sure in a reno/forenza. and if you have the money to throw around like that by all means i think it would be awesome, provided you hand me some of the money my way... er to spread the news about this cool guy and his reno/forenza.... lol anyways I would think about making some serious power like exist3nce before you spend money on a part that won't really be needed untill you have more than stock power(mind you i have no clue what you have/have not done to yours). Its an awesome idea though.
Well not exactly... I am never going to turbo this car, I am an all motor freak. So I will probably never have the same power that existance has. I am currently sitting around 160hp and am looking to add around another 30-50hp... But the sequential really has nothing to do with power... It's all about shift time putting a sequential usually drops shift time by a quarter of a second and when racing that is a lot... I know it's a big investment but it's one of my dreams to have a sequential in my own car... But a true short shift kit will do just as well...
p.s. Does anybody know how that short shift linkage kit is coming along?
I'm developing a quick shifter that is quite a bit different than the one Danny does.basically you can use one or the other to get about 30% shorter shifts or use both for even shorter throughs.
my kit is still in the works (trying to get some bushings made) but should be available in a moth or so. my kit will run around $80 + shipping.
Garrett
also what do you have to be at 160 and adding another 30-50. and i agree that shift time is everything, but if it cuts time by a quarter of a second is that worth 10-15k? it is a good idea don't get me wrong, just lots of money/work for little gain, sort of like port and polish.
for that much money i dont think it would be worth it. if your willing to spend that much you might as well spend some more and just get a car that already has it.
Yeah but getting a car that already has it I would have to buy an old rally car or a westfield type kit car... The rally car would run minimum of 25,000 for one in good shape...
And when you think about track times, and how many times you would shift during a single lap? A 1/4 sec. will add up to a lot of time... And granted I am looking way down the road when I will probably have dropped around 20,000 total into my car... And if you think about it... I paid 12,700 for my reno... Adding 20 grand on top of that would put it in a price range of a brand new STI, Evo, or even a used GTR... And I would be able to trounce cars like that having spent the same amount of money... Plus the car will be exactly how I would build a car and not how a manufacturer would build it...

You are going to have to put a lot more than just $20,000 into your Reno for it to beat a full out rally Evo or STI. And a sequential trany will help, but if you really want to rally I think you may want to get a car that does rallying. I don't know how much money you have but Suzuki does sell a couple rally cars, one being the SX4.
also your talking about beating cars that can make 400-500hp easy. maby you should look into an engine swap. prob be easyier than just a trans. bell housing or mounting plate, mounts, shift linkage, wireing harness, posibly modify drive shafts, steering wheel& colum, reprogram ecm (if possible), trans ecm, possibly modify engine bay to make room just a few possibilities off the top of my head not sure what else might be involved. lots of custom work not to mention finding one that might work the price of it and finding someone who can do the work.
BMS uses our car for rallying... Also I am matching it to a stock evo and stock STI... Neither of those cars (when full rally spec) cost less than $80,000... which is way more than I intend to spend. Also only the evo can easily come close to 400hp(With just an ecu upgrade that up the boost pressure). Also even though thay may have 400-500hp that does not mean they will beat a reno with half the horspower around a track. Both the evo and STI weigh at least 400 to 500lbs more than a stock reno. The only engine swap I would do is with a QED Motorsport built x20xev, and I am pretty sure they make engines that produce around 350hp naturally aspirated. Which is actually the best option I have as far as the best bang for my buck... I am pretty sure it wouldn't cost more than 12g' to buy a fully built motor w/ tranny from them. I have seriously looked at the SX4 Crossover for a car, but I have concluded that instead of spending 16,000 on a new car I would rather spend it on my reno... Which could easily be converted to AWD... I am pretty sure you could fairly easily swap them out... The only car I would get from suzuki that they use as a rally car is the Swift... And Suzuki sells a full JWRC spec swift for the small price tag of 153,000...
Again I am not talking about beating those cars in a straight line... I know it would take a lot more money than that... I am talking about a track race...
