OK, so I had an inclination that my car was doing better than EPA estimates (23/30 2.0 5sp manual), but a recent highway trip has certainly verified it.

Tank one 422 miles 12.2 gallons
Tank two 378 miles 11.1 gallons
Total 800 miles, 23.3 gallons or 34.3 miles per gallon

This while driving 70-85 (3100-3500 RPM fifth gear). Needless to say I'm happily upset the EPA numbers are off.

Well, as far as most of the people here are concerned, the EPA numbers are actually quite optimistic. Most people are struggling to break into the 28 mpg range, even on the highway. My personal combined mileage has been between 28-30 mpg, 90% highway commute.

Although this topic has been debated here forever, this seems to be the first post where you are getting better than what the EPA rates. Consider yourself lucky.

I used to write down my gas milage every fill up and they avrged out to 27.4mph. Then on the way home from CA I used a full tank of gas with my 42lbs/hr injectors and new fuel pump (I think I was running 12:1) and got 28mph at 85mph-100mph the whole way

Only one word comes to mind: "Rare"

It's no secret that this little Aussie engine is decent on the highway; however, very few people are seeing mileage as rated.

I calculate mine every fill-up; I've been getting just over 28 on the freeway. Started out around 23 in town (bought with 3800 miles), now getting just barely under 25 around town (at about 7300).

It sure feels better than my 2000 Sonoma I replaced - that 4.3 was a thirsty beast. The torque was great though. Only car I've owned where you couldn't feel the AC drag the engine whn it came on. BUT- at a cost of 14 mpg in town...

If it makes anyone feel better, most cars underperform as compared to EPA. My parents are sick of their AWD Matrix -- not close to stated mileage, and not stable/safe on icy roads anyway. They're headed back to SUV land.

i am interested in moddifying my my reno to be even more of a sipper than current i.e. cng vs propane kit i work with a guy that will do cheap but unsure which i want after running pros cons. also looking at governing down top speed or rpm ( I drive for a living and I know all the arguments against governing) that said i also know when done right governers boost mpg and safety usually an overide of 3-5mph with stepping on gas and our fleet mech should be able to help me with this when i decide the numbers. I am interested if anyone has any other input aside from the common suggestion to boost economy . I am looking for mods even if i loose power i did not buy to race but to sip and look pretty doing so. i'll use my tacoma for power and the wifes matrix for sport

Easiest way to save on milage is to limit the amount of throttle allowed.

I can think of probably 10 ways to do this off the top of my head, ranging from putting a folded piece of carpet under the gas pedal, to actually adjusting the cable at the TB to be a little looser so you can't go as wide open as before.

You'll go slower for sure, but you'll save a bundle on gas....
