What are non-expensive methods for improving acceleration on a optra/forenza?

Better tires, lighter wheels... weight reduction.

Yep... the hold button trick works wonders... Also, light wheels and good tires... I have noticed better accel by adjusting my throttle cable a bit... It had a lot of slack in it... Now I seem to get better response...

a new air filter might get u 1-2hp if ur lucky. u gotta get a whole new COLD AIR INTAKE, you'll get around 7-10hp increase, considering stock intake is so damn restrictive. Also as mentiond before, some better tires for better traction. aswell has better driving skills and learning how to launch.

Ok after about the first page and a half of rhetoric about the "hold" button I realized OH SNAP they just totally Jacked this guys post. I mean common guys, argueing about IF there is a "sport" mode or not in no way helps this guy out. Anyhow the real question may have been answered but if not I'll square ya away.

As mentioned lighter wheel and better tires do help with acc.
Also I would get a U/D pulley, now that 360dynamics is gone they might be a lil harder to come by, maybe not. That will increase acceleration very very noticably. I would also agree with the others who stated getting a CAI (cold air intake) helps a bunch by allowing your engine to breath much more freely, but I would also look at getting a new exhaust system. There's a topic posted for that already.

Now that I have upset a few folks by calling them post hijackers I'll prepare for my tongue lashings

-Nate

P.S. Yeah I didn't read everypost because frankly I don't much care for reading pissing contests between people over their knowledge of cars, so sue me

...late to the party? You agree with everything everyone else has posted regarding the question, so that just means the issue was dealt with. Very well, I will also answer the question: "I will agree to the advice given too, for what it's worth."

If that's how you interpret correction of information, as a "pissing contest", then forgive the next guy whom chooses to correct information that might otherwise be considered fact by those reading it.

good move Kinky.

As for acelleration, its kinda hard for our car because of the powers all in the high end. Now, it can take some higher rpms, but unless your racing, and willing to shell out the bucks, there nothing realy there.
