Do you like your XL7s?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a new vehicle for my fiancee/significant gf/puppy's momma, something bigger than her PT Cruiser Turbo, relatively nice, not too expensive, and easy to maintain. I had looked at the Hummer H3 for her, but she dislikes the styling of it. Then I realized, the Suzuki XL7 fits the bill well too (and with their abyssal resale values fits the wallet well too!)

I currently have a 2004 Saturn Vue Redline, which is a pretty similar vehicle to the XL7 (supposedly). It's also on GM's Theta platform, and the newer versions have the same 3.6L engine that the XL7 has. It's been a good car, though the inherent cheapnesses of GM production are apparent in some places.

But it's sort of a performance based SUV, and it would be beneficial to have something a little more mainstream as well, to do things like light towing, etc. I saw that it has a 100k warranty on it, which is good, we plan on keeping this vehicle a long time. We're both in college right now, and she will be heading to Optometry school right around the time I graduate, and she will likely keep it through that (and once the truck's paid for, we'll probably keep it and my Vue RL just to have paid for DDs that are pretty nice and relatively efficient). So something that has the ability to last a long time is a requirement.

So how have your XL7s been? If it's only as good as my Vue has been, that's not a huge issue. Are there any really common problems or anything to watch out for? On the Vues, our brake rotors suck and warp instantly, and the front strut mounts go bad constantly. Is that an issue with the XL7 as well? What do you love about it, and what do you hate? Would you recommend the vehicle to others? What kind of fuel economy do you *really* get?

Gonna have to get her to check one out in person and test drive one. Hopefully it's sporty enough that she'll like it and won't feel like it's "too big". Thanks for your opinions all.

How do I get rid of the nasty smell (no it's not me) that comes in from the vents? It started a few weeks ago when we first turned on the AC, but now it stinks even with the AC off.
I know there's some filters, just don't know the location and how to do it.
Thanks

Front door lock

I'm having trouble with the front driver door not unlocking or locking at times. this happens when I use the remote or when using the door button. No problems when I use the key in the door. When using the remote the 1st time I hit unlock the lights come on but no unlock , when I press it the second time the rest of the doors unlock. I checked the fuses even though I doubted it was them because it happens sporadicly. I did here a relay clicking in the fuse box and coud feel it vibrate when it works ok but does not do it when its not working, Could it be this relay because it is marked rear defog relay and not power door lock relay?????? If anyone can help it would save me from paying the stealer. I just turned 38,000 miles and this happened along with my steering wheel making a zip tie closing type sound when turning the wheel. Bad luck always comes in threes I wonder whats next. Thanks!!!

-rack and pinion (bad one i think) turns bout as hard as my old samurai with manual steering.
-diff fluid change
-t-cast fluid change-tranny flush ( that is if my t-case hasnt been leeking)
Then its off to the dealer if thats the case.
- that bulge in the dash - see what i can do there?

you know after being a fanatical suzuki fan, one thing really bothers me.
WHY oh WHY did the have to do anything with GM????????? Its going to be there end in my opinion.

anyhoo, not trying to start any debates over the gm/suzuki thing, as an xl7 owner im dealing with them one at a time.
