So i recently picked up a 1990 samurai. I discovered that the water pump weep hole was pouring out coolant. Im trying to learn how to do my own mechanics, so i went out and got a haynes manual, a new water pump, and some tools. I put the new water pump in, but i made a few mistakes. I did not put the piston to TDC, and i didn't put the timing belt in EXACTLY the way the manual says. It said to put the belt on the crankshaft pulley first, i put it on the camshaft first. I didn't think it would matter, the mark i made on the camshaft pulley/timing belt lined up perfectly.

So I went to start it up after getting it all together. It idled roughly, then died.
Im thinking i screwed up the timing.

I want to fix it but how? what tools do i need? where do i start? keep in mind im new at this!

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

1 when i start my sammie in the extreme cold(1.3 stock carb) it runs horrible spits and spudders and smokes unless i wedge the choke open a little bit, then i clears up and runs wonderful, but i left the choke wedged open a little and tried the next morning and it took forever to start but once started ran great. any ideas?

2 i just picked up an 88 jeep cherokee for 400 bucks because it has coils in the front, rancho suspension and 3.73 detroit lockers front and rear, is there a way and what all would it involve to put those axels under my samurai, even if i dont use the coils

Hello everyone I'm new here!! I have a question about my newly aquired '87 samurai. Some of the front wheel stud are broken off and/or stripped out. How involved of a job is it to get the bad studs out and replace them with new ones? Do you have to take the hub off or will the studs come out through the back with just the wheel removed?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Heavy duty roof rack fits over hard top

Hi guys,

I've got a '96 Samurai that I'd like to fit a roof rack onto. I go surfing heaps and would like to take more boards and people as well as any other luggage I might need for longer trips.

I've also got a fibreglass two piece hard top that is slightly raised at the back. I'd ultimately like to get a cartop.com hardtop but they're a bit pricey!

The roof rack places I've been to suggest two racks fitted onto the fibreglass but I'm sure that wouldn't be very strong and they're $200 bucks each, so I thought I would be able to get something better.

The Calmini ones cost about $500 but I emailed them and they don't have the clearance for my hard top.

I live in Manly, Sydney and I've seen at least three Suzukis with custom type roof racks that look seriously sturdy and I've even left my details on the windscreen but noone's replied so far. I also saw one that was a custom rack with a basket in Rushcutter's Bay and spoke to the guy but he had picked it up second hand from a Vitara owner and actually had 2 (one for each of his suzukis) but was holding onto them.

Does anyone know the best solution for strong roof rack to be fitted onto a suzuki samurai with a fibreglass hard top??

Or know where to get a custom one made up?

I'd really appreciate any help..

Thanks,

SJ410 fuel problem after tank replacement

I've got a Suzuki SJ410 1986-model (std carburetor, 997 cc engine), which used to run just fine. But, the old fuel tank was rusty and leaking when filled more than half, so I replaced it with a second hand one which seemed ok, at least it does not leak. Now since I installed the "new" fuel tank, the car runs fine the first 5 kilometers or so, but then it suddenly looses power just as if there's no more fuel coming. This only happens while rolling the wheels. When I let the car rest for about 10 minutes, it goes fine again, some kilometers, and then the same behaviour comes back.

While warm, I've tried running it in neutral at a couple thousand revs for some minutes and then it runs fine too. But one I start rolling, after a short while it just dies again. I've tried emptying all fuel from the tank and refilled with fresh fuel, this didn't help. The fuel filter is quite new, replaced it about a month before I replaced the tank. Have not yet cleaned the carb because I reckoned it should be ok considering the engine runs fine when standing still in neutral.

This problem really puzzles me. Any suggestions?

sorry for such frequent posts, ive been looking into this and trying to work out the best option... i love my sierra, but open diffs just dont get the job done sometimes.
what i want to know is what the advantages/disadvantages of air lockers and the mechanical lockers such as the detroit locker. in terms of price, i was quoted $1700 per diff for airlockers fully installed, but i have had mates tell me that detroit lockers are around $400-500, but not sure if thats fitted or not, but still cheaper...
some things ive read are that detroit lockers tend to lock during low speed cornering through town which kills the tires... has anyone ever worked with both?... not sure if this makes a difference, but i would only be looking at the rear locker

Hi all, just trying to inspect my head gasket because I am getting exhaust in the radiator. Anyway my problem lies in the area of getting the timing belt cover off. It seems the only way to get the cover off is to remove the crank pulley. If I remove the crank bolt holding the pulley on will it upset the timing drive? Just some guidance around this area would be great.

Thanks

Hi all. I just went to look at a 1991 sierra 1.3l carby motor with 161000 kms and i have a couple of questions which need to be answered soon because it's on ebay and only has 2 and a half hrs left.

Firstly:
It had a fair bit of shuddering when taking off in first, second and into third, the guy told me that this is normal for a sierra is that true?

Second:
When i pulled the spark plugs they were all very white (lean right?), but the tip of the exhaust was really black (too rich?), and i could see on the driveway where it had been leaving a trail of black stuff when it's started. It was also detonating a fair bit under load, (too lean, timing?). He said that it has recently had the head machined so i'm guessing that must have something to do with these problems? He also said that lately it hasn't been driven much, just started and left to idle...

Can anyone give me a possible diagnosis? Is it stuffed? Is it worth buying?

Cheers
