Default Gas Guage Low Fuel Light

About a month ago my wife's Grand Vitara (2005, 6cyl.) started smelling of gas when she pulled into the garage. We took it to a repair shop and they replaced the fuel pump said it was leaking at the seal. Next time she pulled into the garage same smell. (Fuel gauge and low fuel light were acting up at this time also). Took it back to shop they said it must have been a bad part and they replaced it. Couple days later gas smell again. Back to shop and they replaced the pump again. This time they said that a couple of the rubber fuel lines seemed to be frayed and they were not sure if this happened as they were taking the tank in and out for 3 times or a mouse had chewed them, so they replaced both hoses. No more gas smell. Yesterday my wife fills up the car and the fuel gauge goes to empty and low fuel light come on and several miles later gauge settles back to half a tank and light goes out.. This is with a full tank. Any ideas. Taking it back to the shop Monday. Thought I would do some research before that. Shop has been real good about this and has not charged for anything past the first fuel pump replacement. Thanks for any help.

Over filling past the safety shut off can cause this.. It also floods the charcoal canister causing it to release raw gas fumes..
