Default P0420 & p0430

2007 V6 h27a 2.7I Grand Vitara 155k serviced regularly. Australia.
Throwing both of those codes consistantly, coming back after being cleared. Live rural, taking it back to local mechanic isn't an option, got charged +$200 for basically pulling codes and installing an air filter. Obviously didn't fix a thing.
I have no idea where to start. Recently bought a cheap odb2 bluetooth adapter so I can try get some live data. Can anyone give me hints of what to look for.

Also, this car was purchased new by my Mother, I've had it about a year. Recently found about valve shim adjustment, if bad enough could that be the cause? I don't know if it's ever been done and she doesn't remember but always took it to a dealer for major services so hopefully it has been done a couple of times or more. Either way, probably due to be done again, is there an aftermarket special tool available?

Thankyou for any and all help

A p0420/430 is a particularly tough problem in the v6 as it doesnt point to any particular bank of catalytic convertor or any particular sensor failing. I suggest you download the manual and get familiar with a multimeter.
The problem could be in the heated oxygen sensors , the a/f sensors , the cats themselves or the ecm. Unfortunately the workshop manual flowchart if followed can lead to a very expensive exercise ie. they say if the sensors test ok replace both the cats , if that doesnt work replace the ecm.

Im sorry i cant give you a clearcut solution to your problem.

X2 for this good advice, test and diagnose time..

Hint: with a good working CAT, the ext should be ~100* hotter than the input side, Use an IR thermometer..
