Default Keyless Entry Universal remote

I got my Xl-7 used, and it didn't come with a keless entry keychain. Normally, I wouldn't mind so much, it's just that if you open the doors with the actual key, it sets off the car alarm if you don't turn the ignition on whithin a few seconds. Needless to say, this can get annoying.

Three questions:

1) Suzuki is telling me that I have to buy their fob (75 bucks) and get it programmed by their techs (80 bucks). Now, i know that's completely false, because there is on-board programming on the 08 Xl-7, nd the instruction manual is pretty clear about that. However, do I need to buy a suzuki model fob, or can I use any remote entry key (they all work the same way).

2) In the meantime, is there a way to disable the car alarm temporarily?

3) How can i find out if my model has remote start as well as remote keyless entry?

Thanks.

I believe most 3 button GM fobs will work (Gm: 15913420)

GM KEYLESS ENTRY REMOTE KEY FOB 3 BUTTON 15913420:eBay Motors (item 120404679077 end time Jul-09-09 11:27:21 PDT)

Do you have the Limited model (with GPS or DVD player)? If you do, you need the remote start fob.

LOL, first thing that I thought of when I saw the title of this thread was that you were trying to program your Logitech Harmony remote for use with your XL7...

I'm so glad that I found this thread. We need to get a fob for the XL7 we just got and my hubby about died when the dealership told him the prices.

1. Make sure vehicle is in Park
2. Press Vehicle Information button (has the icon of a car and an 'i')until 'PRESS *check mark* TO LEARN REMOTE KEY' displays.
3.The message 'REMOTE KEY LEARNING ACTIVE' will display.
4. Press and hold the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter at the same time for about 15 seconds. A beep will sound indicating that the transmitter is matched.
5. To match additional transmitters at this time, repeat Step 3. Each vehicle can have a maximum of four transmitters matched to it.
6. To exit the program mode, you must cycle the key to LOCK.

related question ... how do you lock and unlock the car with the key?

I can unlock the car (but I have start the card in seconds, or the alarm comes on), but I can't figure out how to lock (all the doors) with the key.

Thanks,

v

I haven't tried it with the Suzuki, but I used to have a VW Bug (2001 I think) that you could put the key in and turn the key one way to unlock that door, do it twice to unlock all doors. Then to lock all doors, simply turn the opposite way. The XL7 may not have that feature though.
