Low idle/AC/Sensor issues 2006 GV

Hi All:
About 2 weeks ago I had my engine light come on and ended up having to replace the upstream oxygen sensor. The car ran really rough after replacement and stalled whenever I came to a stop. Then we realized we had a bad battery - replaced. Car began to run better - engine light finally went off. We ordered the downstream oxygen sensor assuming that we would have to replace. We have not yet replaced it.

The engine idle is still running barely above 0 when not moving. Now when I turn on the AC while stopped - it makes the car stall. When running and air is turned on, there is an obvious loss of power but it doesn't make the car stall.

Can anyone tell me what might be going on here? I've heard that the throttle body would need to be cleaned, I also heard that the ac compressor clutch could be the issue....etc., etc. But the car has had this low idle since the engine light came on weeks ago and the stalling when the ac is put on is more recent.

Any help in diagnosing would be much appreciated.

My two cents.... whenever I changed my battery, I have to leave the car idling for at least five minutes in order to the ECM to restore itself to defaults. If I choose to drive the car without proper ECM initialization, I will have my vitara stall on any stop.

This is what I do:

1. Turn off ignition and disconnect battery.
2. Reconnect battery.
3. Turn on the car.
4. Let it iddle until ECM initialize, you'll notice the car will adjust the RPM to a proper range (650 rpm).
5. Turn off... problem solved.

when the o2 sensor is bad the car will run in open loop the whole time. when the car is started cold it will also be in open loop for first few mins it doesnt use the o2 sensor in this time . so if the o2 wasnt working the car will still idle fine it will just use more fuel.

i would check the throttle body to see if it needs cleaning and also a scan tool would help to work out what codes you have.

does the car try to rev up when the aircon is turned on?

what did the o2 sensor look like when you removed it?

cat might need replacing but engine light would prob come on because sencond o2 would be reading out of range.

if there is no engine light of codes for second sensor then it is probably fine. on my vitara i made a new exhaust and have not put a fitting in for the second sensor and it isnt plugged in atm and it does hunt at idle a bit but also engine check light is on all the time.
