Lightbulb My custom roof cage

Hi All,

Thought i would share with you all my custom roof cage, even though its still a work in progress.

Key points are:
  • Rola Vortex cage used (Note: in australia they discontinued the product so i had to purchase old stock from reseller in Adelaide - Not sure on availability now but i have seen them for sale second hand)
  • 6 x 90mm M6 high tensile bolts
  • 6 x polyurethane\nolathane [not sure which one] spacers - I may redo these to improve the appearance but functionality is great. Will supply better photos next time its off.
  • COMING SOON - New bolts that don't rust but are still high tensile- (these are only 4 week old bolts )
  • COMING SOON - Shovel holder on drivers side door (RHD)
  • COMING SOON - 6MM steel mounting plate on passenger side (RHD) to cater for retractable awning
  • COMING SOON - Deflector plate at front to make car less wind resistant

My inspiration came from members on these forums who did something similar on the 3 Door Grand Vitara's.

The cage specs from Rola are:
Platypus Bag + Vortex Tray BUNDLE
1. The Rola Platypus Bag (59100) is an expandable roof top cargo bag, expanding from 283 to 424 litres. It features weather resistant construction and 8 straps for added security. The cinching strap ensures the bag is tight & compact for travel. Size: 1040mm x 880mm x 500mm/600mm
The bag is ok for transporting a couple of things, but if you were to add firewood/jerry cans to your cage the bag just gets in the way.
2. The Rola Vortex Tray (LTVX) is a stylish black powder coated steel tray includes universal mounting kits for all popular cross bars.
The part number will still be available from Vortex but the size of the basket has changed - Make sure you verify the exterior dimensions of the cage before you buy one.

The specs of the cage are:
Dimensions:
-Interior - 1200mm x 950mm x 100mm
-Exterior - 1400mm x 1020mm x 120mm
Material: Mild Steel
Finish: Painted black - not powder coated

Looks pretty good to me, only thing I would change are those bolts (which you already said you will).

If you can't find the bolts you're looking for you could try buying a new set of the same bolts and apply them some anti-rust paint.

On mine I was able to find anticorrosion bolts and I painted them anyways so that they match better the cage's paint as I wasn't able to find any black bolts that could do the job.

I agree about the bolts - but paint is not the solution. Moisture would get to the threads regardless therefore paint not being able to help. I would like some zinc coated or treated bolts to begin with. The threads are covered in anti-seize graphite paste which does help prevent the thread rusting now but its not perfect.

Regards,
Ivan

That looks very good to me.

You could just use stainless bolts, they are plenty strong, I don't think you would need high tensile when you have so many of them.

Mine is anchored with 8x M6 stainless in the chassis, and the the "spacer" bit is alloy, with an M10 on the end facing up, I then have the little 6mm steel plate connecting two of the "spacers", and on the top of the plate, maybe 60mm offset inwards on the roof I have an M8 going to a rubber mount, and one M8 from the cage end also. In total, the whole cage sits on 4x M8's and I have had it loaded A LOT, so issues.

Thanks for that,
I will take that into consideration (when i go hunting for new bolts) and get something that is appropriate. As i have said before im pretty sure yours and someone elses was my inspiration. Beats paying $1500 for a custom one.

In total, the cage cost me $300 (plus $100 for the bag that i dont think ill use much) and so far $150 worth of fabricating and $12 for bolts that I will need to replace.

Have you had any ideas about a wind deflector to make it more aerodynamic? im guessing its a bit hard for you with your spotties...

so for the price you could have just bolted on a pair of rola roof racks and a basket, the basket would have been the the same height of the roof

I liked the vortex basket but supply was crap and i think they are to heavy.

I have swapped to the Yakima baskets as the same size is 6kg lighter than rola, you can extend them and they also supply high lift jack holders, spot light holders, tyre holders and shovel holders. you just have to make your own awning mount

The rola baskets come standard with a wind deflector

ps - nice work on doing the job yourself

Hey 1GV,
Just had a look at the Yakima site - their size is just a tad smaller than Rola but i can see where they save the weight. Had I found them earlier I probably would have considered it more but Rola seemed to be the only viable option at the time. Looking at all the bolt-on extra's you can adapt to it, i think it would be an excellent solution for those who are not interested in getting custom fabrication work done.

Bolting on roof racks and adding a basket the height would have been between 80-100mm taller. This is partly why I went with the custom mounts. The other reason is that all roof racks that use the rails wont be as strong as my option that bolts onto the roof.

I do have the standard wind deflector but because of the padding i have (so my surfboard doesnt get damaged) i cant use the standard one.

Hey mate,

So do these go straight onto the GV rails? Or do you have to get roof racks to mount it on (and in turn raising the height)???

The website has not been updated. From memory the same part number has a cage that is 1600x1200 in size. Not sure if thats just AU only or if its discontinued worldwide.

From what i heard the company has changed management (or owners) and they are restructuring the business. What that actually means i do know know but their product range may change if someone else is in charge.

Cheers,
Ivan
