Default 2006 Grand Vitara 1.6 VVTI MPG - HELP !!!

Hi Folks
I'm a newbie on this site so hope someone car help with some information on very poor MPG from my wife's 2006 Grand Vitata 1.6 VVTI.

I've been driving it for a few weeks now and have noticed that it returns alarmingly poor MPG for a small 1.6L engine. Around town it gives around 21 mpg, and on a motorway run ( with the speeds around 56 - 60 mph, it only gives 25/26mpg ).

I've asked my wife when the car became this thirsty, but as she normally fills up with 30 - 40 at a time and doesn't check the distance from the tank of fuel, she didn't realise it was so poor.

The car only has 23,000 miles on the clock, and has been well looked after, but I'm now very concerned that something may be wrong to give such low MPG.

I'd appreciate if anyone can chime in with any reasons ?

Thanks :-)

I have no experience with your engine--didn't know there was a 1.6 litre engine in these in any year (certainly not in North America), and I'd think the GV would be a rather large, heavy vehicle for that small an engine. Also, if yours is 4WD, then...well, you have to pay the price for spinning all that running gear.

A smaller engine doesn't always get better mileage. I understand the 3.2 V6 actually burns less fuel than my 2.7 V6. It depends on what you're asking the engine to do.

Yea the 1.6 VVTI engine is common in the UK, but the fuel economy has only been an issue recently once we noticed it........but I can confirm that it was never in the low 20's before :-(

I also have the 1.6 here in the UK, my average according to the read out is always 22-23mpg..having said that,I have never driven it for economy. According to this and other forums, it's a common problem, and as mentioned previously, full time 4wd,high gearing, heavy car all contribute..I make a point of mentioning it at every service, but never see any improvement. I have LPG on it which helps, but it's still a poor return.
