Thank you.
You have to buy side lit fiber to suit your particular application. Length, width, light source, etc. all play a part in the various formulations. They work by blending a medium into the fiber center that reflects or scatters the light to the outside. The percentage of this material (i.e. the mix) will determine the amount of side emittance and the subsequent results. A higher mix % = higher brightness but faster light fall-off in terms of distance.

You will also need a very high power, high focus light source to get the light into the fiber to have any reasonable output. This aspect is probably the most crucial and even the manufacturers are still facing large issues with getting enough light into the fiber. Commercial options are very expensive and just gluing an LED or torch on the end of it will not see you get any real results. As you saw in this thread I custom built some light assemblies and there are many challenges in doing so.

Not sure what you want to do with it, but if the intent is for something similar listed in this thread then I would recommend NOT to attempt it because the side lit fiber is only useful in low light conditions. You will not get enough light into the fiber to make it highly visible under direct sunlight. If you're planning on building DRL, check my final work here http://www.suzuki-forums.com/2g-2006...icators-2.html

To answer your other question, I did not glue the fiber into position. The strands are quite flexible but also thermally sensitive so you can heat and bend it to make it contour a particular shape. I actually tied it to the back of the housing using tiny holes and clear nylon fishing line (which was next to invisible). The sheath doesn't lend itself to gluing I don't think. Firstly its very non-stick and secondly, since it is clear, you would probably see any glue stuck underneath it in a magnified way through the front of the fiber.

I got my fiber through work (via a manufacturer called Poly Optics), but they are a wholesaler so you probably won't be able to get it in small quantities shipped to you in Romania from them. Try Googling "Side Lit Fiber". There's a stack of Chinese stuff also hitting the market, plus US vendors that sell it by the meter.

Anyway, hope some of that helps.

Thanks for the info.I want it to use same like u but for the tail lights.I have started to make different light tests but never use this fiber.
What diameter did u use for the headlights?
I have found a website from UK that sells this fiber but is not such a good quality as the one from the Poly Optic Australia.I am wonder if they ship to such a far country like Romania...
I must send them an email.

I used POLY55 (5.5mm dia.) with an SS180 formulation.
Yeah I've thought about doing something for my tail lights as well, but I'm not sure you can just bake them apart like you can with the headlights. They might be permanently bonded in which case the tail assemblies would be very difficult to customize. Then again, I haven't had a close look yet, so if you take yours apart let me know how you did it.

The tail lights can't be baked since they are "glued" by ultrasound so the plastic is melt together. I want to use fibers on a Volvo s40 tail light.Never unmounted a GV tail light to see how it looks from the back, if it's customizable or not.But at Volvo i can use those fibers by making some holes and insert the fiber which will be lighted from one head.
I am interested to buy the 14 mm diameter fiber. This can be good because it allows me to install bigger diameter and power LED.
Still didn't understand exactly whats with that SS180...So the POLY55 is the product code for the 5 mm dia. fiber but the SS180? what it means?

It's the polymer density. More info on their product page

Sorry, i was referring to the led used at fiber setup, and not for your last setup this from your avatar.
And for the curent stability did u use a after market stabilizing source or did u create it yourself?

It's the same module. Go back to page 6 of this thread (topic 60) and you'll see all the details of the fiber build. It used twin XML-T6 lamps (lighting the fiber at both ends).
As to the power, you need to work out what end voltage your system will run (i.e. determined by the types, structure and number of LEDs in your design). Get a boost converter if your circuit needs >12V or a buck converter if <12V. You can get boost/buck converters (I used a "QS-1212CCBA-80W"), just make sure it's suited to handle large variance on the 12V input side as car electronics are prone to high voltage spikes. Don't bother with LED torch based controllers, they will not survive for long in a car circuit due to the above problem.
