Default Speaking of Loose Floormats

Currently there's a controversy going on about floormats coming loose and jamming the gas pedal at full throttle on Toyota models. Questions remain whether the problem is really in the ECM.

Anyway, on the GV, the driver's footwell mat is held in place by a single hook screwed into a plastic fitting on the floor under the front of the driver's seat.

On ours, this plastic fitting has pulled out of the square hole stamped in the floor. The result is that the floormat can drift forward, and could cause problems with the pedals.

So far securing this plastic fitting has defeated my fix-it skills.

Does anyone else have this problem, or what can be done about it. I hesitate to replace the part since any new part likely would suffer the same fate.

My 08 factory mats have a Velcro like effect on the back and sticks to the carpet flooring.

So far my plastic fitting is still attached. I have one on the passenger side as well.

geevee, maybe try a larger screw to hold the plastic clip in place? That might expand the clip enough to wedge it into the hole. Or you could make up a small metal plate held to the car with nut inserts (the pop rivet kind) and also use a nut insert to hold the metal hook to the plate. That way its all removable if needed.

There are also these kind of rubber inserts that might work with less fabrication: Well-Nut Threaded Inserts | Emhart.com

You also might use one of those collapsable aluminum drywall anchors of the right size to give yourself a properly threaded insert.

My 2009 GV dont have those hooks at all!

It's not an issue for me since I bought rubber mats from Canadian tire. They do slide forward but I just pull it back once in a while. I doesn't bother me.

I got the hook in hand when I bought my car, dealership said I didnt need it, and I could put it in if I wanted, but didnt have to.

I've never had a problem with the mat moving, it stays nicely in place..

Thanks everyone for the tips and comments. I didn't mention that we have the aftermarket Suzuki brand black rubber front floormats. It may be that using them makes it more likely to pull out the plastic fitting.

my 07 reno just has a plastic....had a plastic clip that held the mat back. after reading about GV88 having Velcro on his I think i might get some Velcro and super glue it to the bottom of the mat and see if that will work, yeah a new weekend project.

Sounds like backpedalling to cover faulty ECM issues on Toyota's part to me (or maybe just poor habits on the part of the driver...). C'mon, many of us have been driving for decades in all kinds of vehicles (and in my case anyway, all kinds of junkers with all manner of mats and/or other stuff on the floor), and who's ever had something on the floor jam their throttle full open before? From what I heard about the accident that caused all this speculation, the Toyota in question had things such as a pushbutton ignition (no key) which requires the driver to hold it down for 3 seconds before it'll shut off the engine.

Anyway, as far as the GV mats are concerned...I removed the stock mats very quickly and put in some deep, "dirt trapping" style mats that are quite stiff--I can't imagine them getting pushed up into the footwell unless I'm in a front end collision (and if they ever did, in the GV I can just turn off the ignition with a twist of the key--or even better, just push in the clutch).
