Yet another problem with this car!!! Please help me decide what this part is (PHOTOS)
Hi
2006 1.9 DDiS diesel Grand Vitara has developed a squeeking noise that has got ridiculously loud from this belt/pulley. Now sounds like its going to snap off but what is it and what does it do? It sqeeks with each rotation (roughly twice per second) at idle and speeds up as the car speeds up.
Many thanks in advance:

Although your diesel engine is not sold in NA, I would guess that pulley is probably an idle pulley between the alternator and the water pump, but I can't be sure. My manuals are for the M16, J20 and H27 engines.
The squeaking noise is most likely the pulley bearing about to seize. Whatever the bearing is, if it seizes the belt will probably fall off or break and you will lose your alternator, power steering and water pump.
This is not something you can probably fix yourself, I'd get it in for service ASAP.
No, its probably not the camshaft pulley. The camshaft is most likely driven by an internal toothed belt or a chain. The accessory drive belt on the front of the engine that you can see is not strong enough. It drives the alternator, power steering, water pump and A/C, if you have it.
unfortunately, on the Renault diesel engine, it is a touthed belt, not a chain, and needs to be changed at each 75K kms. But it is not the one shown here.
Hi, diesel engines are renault, and have many many problems, if you undestand spanish, there are another forum with many helpful information, search "suzuki88" on the web or another european forum
taken it to an independant garage (not suzuki) today and they reckon its just the belt that needs replacing. They reckon there is a groove in the belt and hairline cracks.
What do you guys think of that? doesnt look too bad in the pictures but I can see what he means.
You don't mention your mileage, but if its the original belt from 2006 then it certainly will not hurt to replace it. I would guess its a relatively easy and inexpensive fix. With the belt off you can check the pulley bearing as well to see if it is stiff or rough when turned. Worn or misadjusted belts can certainly squeak, although perhaps not to the degree you've mentioned.
