Throttle cable adjustment.

Has any body any ideas on how to correctly adjust the throttle cable on a 2005 swift S. When the car was puschased (3 months ago) there was play in the accelerator pedal of almost a couple of centimetres. I have now adusted the free cable play so that there is instant response from the accelerator.
However even before I adjusted the cable when changing gears there was a hesitancy for the engine to pick up speed smoothly (you could feel the gear lever shuddering backwards and forwards momentarily). Since the cable adjustment the problem is sill there. Is there anything else on the motor which could cause the problem?
