2004 XL-7 Brake problem

I had an intermittent grinding noise when slowing to a stop. Not always, just every now and then. Seemed to be coming from the front, they were still stopping OK. Had all the brakes checked by a tyre place, they said all was fine, plenty of brake pads left. Then I asked the Suzuki dealer to check them at the last service. They said all good, it was just brake dust(???) I don't know what they did but the grinding sound has gone and now when I turn the wheel hard to the right just as I pull up the brakes click, sort of like a ratchet sound, or like when I was a kid and we pegged a bit of cardboard into a bicycle spokes to make an engine sound. Brakes still stop OK, just this clicking sound. I'm thinking maybe it's something to do with the ABS system?
Any theories out there?

I sometimes get that "grinding" sound when braking. It's sort of like you're running over a heavily rutted piece of road -you can feel it and hear it.

I've got no idea what the cause is but have noticed other people mentioning similar things in the past.
