Default Speaker size - front door?

All the search results indicate 6.5" is the stock speaker size, but on my Jap 2004 XL-7 I've got 6" speakers.

I was wondering if anyone else has found this? I was all set to purchase some nice 6.5" speakers, but unless I do a lot of custom work there's no way they'll fit. There doesn't seem to be much choice for higher end 6" component speakers either.

Default Speaker size

My 2001 Grand vitara V6 has 6" speakers in it.

But the JBL GTO628 6.5" speakers come with a metal adapter ring that allows them to fit perfectly, I did the back roof speakers today, and am doing the fronts tomorrow

Thanks for the tip. I still haven't done anything about replacing them yet.

I did fit an old Pioneer woofer into the door but it sounds fairly average and lacks bass. I think I need to seal between the door trim and the speaker (like tha factory Clarion speaker was set up with a foam sealing ring around it.)

Default speakers

The rear clarion roof speakers also have a foam ring around the front perimeter of the speaker which provides a "sort of" seal to the roof grills.

To Remove the rear roof grills oull them down on the rear edge then rotate them about 10 degrees anti clockwise as you look at them and they un slot from the roof lining, revealing the speaker, with its three mounting screws holding in a basket welded to the roof of the car.

There are two locating lugs on the grills which sometimes have glue on them holding them to the roof lining, you need to apply enough pressure to overcome the glue, the lugs are located such that you must get the grills the right way round to get them back on.

I've got door speakers in the rear- it appears only USA/ Canadian models had the roof speakers?

I also found some JBL component speakers that should fit and are priced nicely GTO608C : JBL Car & Marine Audio

And here's info on the GTO628: JBL Car & Marine Audio

I have two V6s one I have had from new (2001) for my wife and one I bought last week as a work car to save the miles on my scooby. I live the UK and both are UK spec, and both have roof mounted rear speakers...

Maybe its only the XL7 that has door speaker in the rear?

I think you might be onto something there!

I just had a look on a car sales website and it appears the Aussie (jap made) GV's have the rear speakers in the roof too. I always assumed it was a difference bewteen the Jap and North American models.

I'm guessing the XL-7 rear doors are longer???

I saw a five door GV today and the rear doors do certainly look a lot shorter- that would explain why the speakers are in different locations. The XL-7's have got the rear aircon overhead in behind the seats so that would explain the differences.

Here you go:
