Fuel pump help

alright, i have a 2001 xl-7 that is giving me some problems. the fuel pump is misbehaving pretty badly or so the ecu tells me. a few days ago my gas gauge started to swing back and forth pretty wildly, and right after that the check engine light came on. i assumed the fuel pump was to blame, so i took it to autozone and had the code reader plugged in and sure enough the fuel level sensor(which is probly tied into the sending unit) was throwing a trouble code. i obviously don't want to drive around with this problem persisting, and i don't have $330(which is B.S.) for a new sending unit at the moment. I haven't contacted a suzuki dealer yet but i can only assume the price will be about the same as it is at autozone. has anyone out there had this sort of problem or know where i can get a new sending unit for a reasonable price? maybe the sending unit needs taken out and cleaned up a little? any help here would be appreciated. thanks.
