Default Rev limiter

Do 2004 xl-7's have rev limiters? I was on a trip and my cruise control down shifted and really went to far in my opinion. Now I have a valve tapping noise. It down shifted and stuck there and my cel started flashing. I shut the cruise off asap but now I'm worried. Drives fine, just taps now.

Flashing MIL = miss fire.. Cruise will disengage..

Do you still have a CEL?

Can you do a drop test to check which pot is not firing?

I checked and had two pending codes. One was multiple misfire. The other was cylinder 5 misfire. It runs fine now, it is tapping like a valve out of adjustment. I wonder if I lightly hit a valve with a piston.

What? Do you mean you can rev the h27 to 7k+ rpm? I know of no modern electronically controlled engine that does not limit RPM.

OP, when you say it went too high, like close to redline or did you confirm it was way past 6500 rpm?

I did not confirm. It just revved higher than I have ever heard and the cel started flashing. The tap is now intermittent and not constant. My Dad thinks maybe a hydraulic is malfunctioning if these xl7's have them or do they have solid lift cams?

The 2.7 has hydraulic lifters. If the cel light is on, id say you have a larger issue then a bad lifter.
