Default 1999 J20 Cylinder Head Removal steps

Factory manual says to remove Rack and Pinion Steering on way to removing timing chain cover and further to remove the cylinder head. Please share your experiences with a cylinder head R&R on the Suzuki 2.0 liter. My 1999 Tracker is a 2 wheel drive. Thanks

Default repeat thread

Have 1999 Chevy Tracker with 2.0 liter J20. Trying to feel my way into self repair of timing chain replace and perhaps cylinder head rebuild. I guess my hope was to get as many experienced replies as possible. Timing chain and head R&R questions might get a different (better) response.

If the timing chain broke or skipped some teeth, you may have valve damage...
  • Your first step is to disconnect the battery and throw the key in a desk drawer until you evaluate the engine..
  • Second step would be to remove the chain, then
  • do a leak down on all cylinders, each at TDC(c).

If any fail the head MUST come off.....

Motor runs well- compression shows well within specs and all cylinders equal. But get bubbles in radiator neck and then overheating (about 5-10 minutes after starting) Am considering Therma Gasket head gasket fix (money back guarantee!). Started reading FSM and it started taking about removing oil pan and rack and pinion steering-- the Therma Gasket pour fix started looking real attractive. Did more reading on this forum (timing chain sticky) no mention of all this oil pan rack removal SO trying to get hands on answers to realistic removal tips. Thanks for your hands on tips for timing chain cover removal and cylinder head R&R

I do not recommend, miracle cures in a can. It is however your baby....

A cooling system test or leak down will verify any leaks... Philip
