Question Power Steering Pump Problems

Howdi.
recently had a lot of noise from the front pulley area on my 51 reg GV auto diesel.
had the tensioner and belts replaced (tensioner was the problem)
had the power steering pump off (to inspect for wear)
and back on, now...
THE STEERING IS AS HEAVY AS A PREGNANT BUFFALO.

inspected the insides from the 4 bolts on the back, all turns, little slidy slot things move freely, as far as i could it was bled to full before putting together and bled the pipes. but the buffalo remains...

any advice, other than "get another one" (it WAS working before the stripdown)
minimum £90 breakers, and we have just spent £700 in the last few months, i'm TRULY struggling...

will try loading pics in a short while, for what i can see in the darkness ((:

any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Neil.

And you are sure that the belt is tight enough?

I don't know how you "inspected" the pwr strg pump for wear, BUT if you dissasembled it, then there is the problem I think.

If not, I'd suspect air in the system.

thanks for getting back so quick Max.

belts tight enough, yes.
inspected for wear by removing 4 x 12mm head, 8mm bolts from the rear of the unit.
the roter turns with the pulley wheel. the blades slide in and out nicely, all seems as it should be.
going to judge approx rpm, (will have to be Friday) remove, and then re-create the approx speed with the pulley, and see if it seems to PUMP. other than that. I'm a bit stuck as to what to do.
seems SOOOO many different types on ebay etc. don't know if i can get one even if the magic money fairy blessed me with £100 ((: lol

by the way, suzuki want £657 +pennies for one.

HMMMMM, could be a problem there...

When you refer to blades, are you indicating the vanes that sit in the central hub slots.. these should have small springs (bent spring metal) in the slot to push the vanes out into the pump bore...

Have they lost tension or missing?? Either you have air in the pump or the fluid is bypassing the vanes...
What fluid did you use on assembly?? .....Philip

thanks dude
the vanes/fins, yes they are what move out push the oil and move back in.
none had springs tho... i presumed they would work on centrifugal force as the center drum was spinning round, forcing them out.
hmmmm, wasn't any of them with any type of spring, and didn't seam like there was any waste metal inside the pump.

was standard power steering fluid.

presume there shouldn't be an air block either, last night i filled the hose that goes from the pump to the steering thingy (technical term for the ... steering... thingy...) with fluid, until it ran out of the pump, then held thumb over pump hole and filled the hose to overflow.
put the banjo bolt back in, hardly lost any fluid at all.
if any air at all, should be in the long hose and not in the pump.

another day in the snow wasted

Are you aware that there is a pressure relief/flow control valve built into the pump body? May be it is stuck open?

thanks fordem.
i wasn't aware, but I've had it off again, removed it, all seemed OK so left it out and tried it again. nothing.

just had to order one, cant get this type off ebay or any breakers i know of so local garage getting me an exchange/recon one at about £300
SHEEEEEEEESH

still, the ADVANTAGE is, i can now change a power steering pump in record time.

slacken belt and remove from pulley.
remove 22mm banjo bolt + hose,
remove hose from pipe below,
undo x3 12mm head bolts

nope. i took back off, connected it to a drill and spun it, all seamed to work, the little (FINS?) sprung out through centrifugal force.

I'm as puzzled as question mark ? (eh?)
