Found a 1.8 engine from a 98 sidekick that looks identical to my 2.0 in my 01 vitara that died.
Don't care about any horsepower difference. I just wondered if there would be any issues plugging in the 1.8 in place of the 2.0.
I realize the computer has no idea what engine it's managing but does anyone know of any issues that might arise?
Thanks
Sounds like a backward move to me - but - to answer your question - some of the sensors are different and that may cause problems with the electronics - if you swap ALL of the 2.0 sensors over (which will probably mean swapping manifolds, etc.) it should work.

I have a 1.8 with 260k miles and it still runs strong. It doesn't burn any oil, but I have thought about if it ever did go putting the 2.0 in which is exactly the opposite of what your doing. I don't care about the horsepower either it just seems harder to find the 1.8's I know from experience they are excellent engines. I don't have any doubt I will get at 300k out the one I have now.
Actually I'd rather have the 2.0 just for ease of installation sake. But the reality is the 2.0 is almost impossible to find anywhere close to me and not costing $1000 to $1800. Not to mention they all have well over 130 to 160K miles.
I found a low mileage (not sure how much exactly) 1.8 for $700 obo.
I just wanna get the thing running and sell it as I have too many projects already.
It's been a great little SUV and I have to give it kudo's for surviving as long as it did with my son's ignorance for maintainence!
