Default Lift + 31's = no damn power

Just for info...

99 Tracker
2.0
Auto trans
Installed 5:12's
31" Toyo MT's

Just wont go down the freeway anymore, Really bummed but knew this was a possibility just was hoping I was going to be wrong.

Doesnt help I'm at 4500' above sea level.

Dropping down to a 235/75 tire I guess, considered a 30 but I just don't think that would be short enough.

If I had time I would turbo it and problem solved however I just don't have the time to do that right now.

Looks good but it needs to be functional as well.

Ya,

5spd came with 5:12 and auto was like 4:62 or something like that.

For my 99 the pumpkin is a direct swap from an older kick so I was able to swap in the 5:12's easy as pie. I think the one I used was out of a 94 maybe.

Just have to be careful if yours has ABS that the one your swapping is also ABS. That is if you don't want the light to be light all the time and you want the ABS to function as intended.

I've already gone from 4:62's to 5:12's, its less money by a long shot to go smaller tires.

Going from long ago memory so apologize if the facts are off....
I ran a Samurai for years with 31s. I had 3.91 dif and a SJ410 transfer case which I believe was 1.4 underdrive in high range so thats equiv to about 5:46. As it was also my daily driver I had a set of P235-15 for every day use and put on the 31.s for trail riding. I only had a 1.3 litre motor. I would suggest forgetting about overdrive at a minimum and see if that improves performance? You want to keep those 31s for the trail.

I dont think your far off on your figures.
I had a zuk with 5:12's, 4:1 t case and 35" tires for years.

This Tracker serves a completely different purpose. I drive it to work and wanted to be able to take it to the local hills once in a while.

First and foremost it needs to be drivable on the freeway, no compromises here at all..

The 31's are off, running a LT235 now. I don't like it at all at this point so I'm looking at Turbo so I can run the 31's at a later date. If the turbo doesn't work out I'll sell the damn thing and buy a Toy.

Honestly, after running a 1.3 with 35's for as long as I did I thought hell a fuel injected DOHC 2.0 should run 31's with 5.12's but nope..

Love zuks had them for years (thus the screen name) but I'm older now, I need to be able to enjoy what I'm driving end of story, hell Ive installed a full Navi/dvd/sat radio in this thing as well as a short block, suspension lift, body life 5.12's and a locker.. the trip home tonight was much better with the 235's but still hard for it to hold 75.. Think I may get a new timing set (sounds rattley) maybe the cam timing s off a tad?

Is there a way to check to make sure the base timing is good?

I'm rambling now so off I go..

How keen are you- what about a 2.7l V6 transplant? That should solve your problems and be a bolt in conversion.

The turbo IMHO could prove to not provide much gain where you want it, you'd really need to research the correct size turbo and even then it might not give you what you want. Plus it would be a constant strain on an engine which wasn't designed with turbocharging in mind. You could end up with detonation issues, overheating etc.

Cool

You still need more gear to bring the true at the tire ratio back to where it was at least stock with the 31s.

Use following formula to calculate your stock ratio

rpm = mph x gear ratio x 336 / tire diameter

Then use that rpm for stock with 31 inch tires and solve for ratio.
