Use following formula to calculate your stock ratio

Thanks for the advice
You'll notice a few posts up I've already installed 5:12's and LT235 tires.

Gearing is right on for the 235's now but I still dont like it.

Needs a larger engine end of story, the 2.0 is to short winded...

Cool

Well even with the gearing to match the same rpm with the 31's etc you will still be slower on acceleration due to the large increase in weight due to the increase in the wheels and tires all around. You will have to go a little stiffer than the stock rpm to get the acceleration you are after. If the the 2.5 V6 only puts out 150 hp vs 127 hp you will not see a great deal of boost as that engine also weighs more too.

But more gearing and bigger engine. But it is a limitation of the vehicle you are choosing to modify. Really large wheels require an engine with a large amount of torque. Usually a large V8 to spin them up with speed you desire.

Most people do not understand the worse place to add weight is on the tires and wheels. You have to not only move it but spin it up and then slow the spin down so it affects acceleration and braking.... But since most do this for the look they do not care about the drop in performance.

This is true, the "But since most do this for the look they do not care about the drop in performance." part.

In my case the acceleration part is acceptible the freeway part is not. @ 65mph it's fine on flat ground or with a slight incline but if there is a large overpass it kicks into passing gear to maintain the speed which sucks

Live a learn I guess.

Coming from Tracker (91) to Sami's (88ish) to Jeeps then back to Tracker I was really hoping for just a bit more.
I mean for heck's sake it's a damn 2.0 DOHC MPFI and after running a 1.3 with a Webber on 36" tires (sure it struggled but it's a 1.3) I was sure hoping the Tracker would turn 31" tires with 5:12's!!
Oh Well I guess.
I'll run it through the winter then sell it and go back to an Audi I guess.

Cool

How about you swap in a 5 speed manual.

More gearing ie more torque. And less rpm jump if you need to drop a gear on a big hill????

I feel the power and gear selection loss on the auto tranny is the real issue here not so much the engine or the gearing now. Still if you went to a little stiffer gearing it would not tend to jump down a gear so often..

You can always go with a lighter rim,

I Suppose that's always a possibility

Would rather not though, I like Autos for off Road..

Not spending any more money on gears.. Just not worth it.
I can sell it pretty easy and replace it with something that has a real engine.

Pretty hard to get lighter than the OE wheel...

Forget examining each engine's merits on their peak power output (which will be at around 6000RPM!)- what matters is the torque curve. The 2.7l V6 will generate a lot more torque than the four cylinder at low revs- that is what you need.
