Do you think I should go and loosen the a/c belt tensioner. I'm a little concerned it might be overly tight and could damage something else.

A 10 mm.

Slipping an 18" piece of hard metal tubing or pipe over it as an extension helps a BUNCH. Not that you need the extra torque, but to aid in accessibility / reach.
