02 Suzuki Esteem Wagon 1.8

I've been having starting problems with my 02 esteem wagon 1.8. Have to pump the gas pedal excessively to get it to start and the run it for awhile before it idles. I've always noticed that the engine turns a little longer while starting then I would like and brought it into the dealership once cause I felt I was losing pressure along the fuel line, maybe my fuel pump seal. They insisted that was not happening even though they didn't check the actual fuel pump. I even pointed out the secret warranty of the fuel pump seal.
Today, it was a really hard start, pumping the pedal and then black exhaust coming out of the tail pipe.
Any suggestions other then the fuel pump seal? I know there is no fuel filter. Oil level is fine and air filter is fine. It has to be the fuel delivery system, just trying to pin point the problem ... thought if I posted here someone might have experience or insight.
