I wish I had the magic answer, but I don't.

I just changed my the oil on my '01 @188,000 miles with Valvoline 5W-30 and have had any major leaks. I've got a couple very minor ones, but there seems to be no major changes on those. I suppose that there is a chance that there may have been a bad batch of 10W-40 go out, but I'd bet there'd be a lot bigger flap that just you.

Here's a long shot - your oil pressure relief valve may have malfuntioned. Rather than bleeding pressure off as is the norm - it stuck closed and didn't bleed off. That might generate enough extra pressure to blow out your seals and leak like you described.

The real question is - did an additive in the oil knock some crud loose and gum it up? I've had the opposite happen on an old Buick I had. I used an engine flush to get the crud out of the engine and free a sticking lifter. It worked like a charm, but when I was cruising home that evening, it stuck the relief valve open and I had no pressure at idle. I was able to limp home and rebuild the pump & relief spring. Didn't have a problem since.

Just an idea.
