Got it done
Okay, never did definitively find out if it would run without the CPS (or CKP Sensor, or Crank Position Sensor) but decided to swap the necessary parts anyway. I took the distributor from the 97, the oil pan, the crank gear with the 6 pointed star attached (this is what the CPS senses) and the oil pump. The CPS bolts into the flange of the oil pump from the bottom (thru oil pan). Everything worked and I got it running again.
Check out the picture. That is what I found in the oil pan. Apparently I had been running this engine on a 60 mile a day commute for 6 months with a blown #3 piston!!! Amazing that the little beast kept on going! I am impressed.
