oops, how you going to lock the cam to do that?

Does anyone know if it is absolutely necessary to remove the valve cover again in order to loosen off all my 1 camshaft cog bolt etc. and set my timing to #4 TDC (which seems ackward?), no , ackward , that is the factory way of doing it.
if you need the factory words, i can send them.

or can I just forgo that procedure and just replace my camshaft sprocket, timing belt etc. originally set at #1 TDC. thanks...confused!
ah no, but you can be the first and tell us. hahahahahahah

ok on the 8v

if you have leaking seals then you really have no choice.
if they are not leaking dont change them.
it is tricky and you above ,tells me you may muff that.

sorry.

top and front covers off.
sorry

motor to tdc #4 , firing , all valves closed (justlook and fell loose lash on #4).

now mark all , timing marks and note if correct now.

now loosen all valve adjusters, (the 8v has bias on #4 and #4 so must be loosened, sorry)

timing belt swap

who am i to tell you what is best for you.?
some folks (sadly) just cut off the new belt and pound on the new belt with a rubber mallet.
taking noting loose save the covers.

what ever floats your boat. LOL.

setting the Cam with #1 means you have to align the top cam cog
to a NON EXISTENT bottom mark.

or , remarking the cam cog itself.

do not forget to mark all timing marks and key ways postions onall cogs.

the top cam cog has false marks. so becare full

the last step

crank bottom pointer aligned with top mark on pump. and key up.
on the cam/;

titty, dimple or E mark pointed UP. my 91 has dimple and machine mark.
Cam key DOWN !!!

if you are smart , you will pay careful attention to getting the tension perfect. if you do that , it may run 60 to90k more miles.

cheers
