thats correct.

if ECU see A/C switch ON, for any reason, idle is raised.
same with P/S over load switch.

200 rpm is not a symptom of that. 1000 is.

The 1.8L has a hard to clean EGR (but has a 1 part EGR system) no VSVS, tubes and other junk, ECU is vastly smarter and runs EGR valve all by its self.
and NO STinking MOD VALVE.
I suspect 1.8L will allow exhaust changes. to a greater degree too.

if the tps switch ( and will be intermittant at first) fails, the ecu is never signaled
that you are idling ,
when that happens, the ISC is shut down.
the ecu , thinks you are cruising.
so the only air you get is leakage around the all most closed, throttle plate.

the 1.8L has a electric IAC/isc valve , this valve can stick closed.
it is the primary source of air at idle , HOT.

if you think compressor is overloading motor. just drop the belt.
why guess. drop it.
make sure you dont have a serpentine belt that runs them all.
most kicks have PS/AC belt. is see same on 1.8L pl, just diff. routing.

Id have the hear motor , and listen to bearing with my stethoscope.
ive see bad alterator bearings do , amazing things.

one has to keep an open mind, but hands on , there is no subs.

cheers.
