The lifters ticking is normal when you first start the car and it makes kind of a growling sounds when you accelerate, once the engine warms up it goes away my 1999 1.6 has been like this for the last 100k+ miles that I have owned it.
But if it still does it once the engine has warmed it they might just need to be adjusted.
