It's time consuming but each pair of 'ears' surrounding each line can be opened enough to pry the retainer away from the frame. Usually age and the elements has made them brittle. Rust reduces the cross section of the lines, weakening them. Take care not to move them too much when removing the retainer or you might wind up replacing more than one line. They are cheap- probably nearly as much effort to get them off to re-use as to cut the segment between each line w/ a single edge razor blade.
