Unhappy engine bogging under load

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum but there is a lot of great info thanks. I've read every related post but havn't solved our problem yet. My son recently bought an awsome 87 sammy project which runs great at idle but boggs intermitantly when you try to drive. Ocassionally it will drive ok for a block or two but then will bog out severly or die all together. The person we bought it from said it needed a carb. At this point cash is low however we have a parts vehicle and have tried several things with this resource. Things we've tried: we have put two other used stock carbs on, chokes operated well however the fuel level in the sight glass was at the very top that may be normal? Anyway same performance. Checked for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner none found. This led me to believe maybe not the carb. Bypassed the fuel tank and filter no change. Tested the new looking fuel pump: it pumped a pint of fuel in less than 30 seconds, and maintained the proper vacuum on the suction side. Thought maybe its restricted exhaust. Did vacuum test Vac fairly steady at 20. Vacuum increased as we brought up to 2500rpm no decline unless it bogged, if I just held the throttle steady it would catch up and vac would go back up. On to the ignition. Maybe weak or intermitent spark? Changed plugs, cap wires and rotor good. Vacuum advance tested bad. We had another used distributer(vac advance good) and coil so we changed them out and set the timing (it was 10 out (0) when we checked it before we changed the dizzy). No change!!! UGH!!! Maybe it really is the carb but 3 doing the same thing? I've read alot of folks say the stock carbs are great when they are working well but when they start messing up they're junk? No dough for a new weber. I've rebuilt quadrajets before are the Hitachis anything special? My next step would be to get a kit and rebuild. Are their any special tricks for this carb? I know this is a looong post but I'm out of ideas and would sure appreciate your help. My son's a bit discouraged and bugging me to death to get it driveable!! Help! and thanks.
