jtgh is on a distinguished road
Default

it will rattle until it turns to dust , and when it breaks up , i can clog the muffler.
on my jeep it ,just blew down the road as dust. no ill effects.
but , here are some facts:

89 has stupid computers, on up to 91 in canada.
as car gets newer the missing cat will cause the EGR function to fail.

The EGR MOD valve must have back pressure to work (open) if it dont open
on newer cars, it will be detected by the OBD1 EGR monitor and set code 51.
when that sets the car goes to limphome mode and sucks gas like a monster

on an 89 , removing it can be ok for some people and some cars.
after 1994 , it is impossble to fool the ECU .
If it is CALif. car, mostly none can be fooled.

2 choice here. and good advice.
try a test pipe, if if MPG is ok and CEL is off and on code 51 ( you will not get 51 on a 89' so just check MPG)
if you have problems, then just take out the test pipe and put in the real Mcoy.
one can get a clone for less than $100.

this answer is for you and others with this comon problem.

Not all ECU's are the same.

Also some guys pull the cat and put in glass packs, this sets back pressure to zero
and then the fuel maps in the ECU will be ALL wrong.
car will go lean, I think?

The engine needs a certain amount of back pressure , so you dont foul up the maps.

Maps are tables in the ECU that have all air and fuel ratios for every RPM and EVERY load, they are tuned for your cars Volumetric Efficiency (the ability to pump air)
if you muck with the air pump the maps are junk.

that is the hard cold facts.

dont ask me ask any pro engine turner.
