I recently bought a 97 X-90 (same bones as the Sidekick/Tracker). The SES (Service Engine Soon) light was on, but I got a really good deal so I bought it anyway. The vehicle failed the emissions test with a P0400 code. But after some research I learned that this is pretty common and can usually be easily fixed by cleaning the EGR passageway (especially one particular 90-degree turn in the EGR passageway), which I will probably get to in the next few weeks. Anyhow, if you find a nice Tracker that you like and SES light is on, just be aware that it might not necessarily be a huge financial problem; could be a simple fix. You might also consider taking an OBD code reader (Harbor Freight sells them cheap) with you when you go to check out a Tracker for sale.

Well, good luck in your search for a Tracker. The 96-98 are my favorite years for the Tracker; I've always though those years had the best front-end styling.
