Interesting how the towing weights are different for Australia vs where you live?
The official city economy figure here for my XL-7 is over 16l/100km, so I'm reasonably happy with getting just under 14l/100km. My previous vehicle was a Daihatsu Feroza (called a Rocky in the USA), it averaged just under 11l/100km. It weighed around 400kg less, was a manual and had only a 1.6l four cylinder engine- so the XL-7 doesn't do too bad IMHO in comparison.
BTW I've found a lot of diesel engined vehicles rate really well for the "official" consumption figures, but the real world experience is a bit different.
